Deborah Boardman
Deborah Boardman’s work explores sacred geobiology, heraldry, and the relationship of identity, place and presence. She creates paintings, works on paper, artist's books, animation and sculpture in a variety of media.

Most of Boardman’s paintings are constructed with very loose, horizontal brush strokes. Gesture is a meditative practice and an experience of wonderment with the act of painting itself and its material manifestation, Boardman explains. I see my gesture as a connective device, allowing all of the complexity of subject matter to co-exist in the overlapping of my story with that of my subject.

Boardman received her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art (1984) and her MFA from Tufts University - School of the Museum of Fine Arts (1987). She is a recent recipient of an Illinois Arts Council Special Assistance Grant, an Indiana Humanities Council Grant and the Roger Brown Artist Residency. Deborah teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago as well as Lake Forest College. Her work has been exhibited by at the Boston Drawing Project and Bernard Toale Gallery in Boston. Deborah will be having her first solo exhibition at Heskin Contemporary in the fall of 2009.
