Victory Over the Barbarians, 2009, oil on canvas, 60 x 124 inches

Jennifer Riley
Jennifer Riley’s paintings are both lyrical and classic modern abstraction. The structures of her paintings, their off-square format, the internal geometrics, and their relationship to architecture owe their inheritance to modernist and minimalist strategies. Exploration of the material and the immaterial through depictions of flat and illusionistic space is at the heart of her work.

Jennifer Riley is originally from Sharon, Connecticut and now lives and works in New York City since 2002. She received her MFA from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College, NY. She also received a BFA and MA degrees in Fine Arts from Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. In 2000 Riley was awarded a Lee Krasner Memorial Award, and a Fellowship Grant from Bard College (1998-2000). She also received a Massachusetts Cultural Council Award For Painting (2004), and an Institutional Grant from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (1989-91).
